The main electrical service for your residence is one of the most important utilities within your home. A properly sized and maintained service will last within the home for a good 15 to 25 years depending on the type of installation, additions and changes to the home. This is the importance of professional Service Upgrades.
Keep in mind when doing a service change this change only improves the quality of equipment and assures proper service without interruption due to mechanical failures. A service change will not eliminate individual circuit problems within the building. These must be addressed on a per circuit basis. An upgrade in service would be to install equipment that will enable the house to draw additional power from the utility company. Not sure about your electrical service needs? What is an electrical service?
Your electrical service encompasses a range of components, including the service pipe (whether made of metal or PVC), the meter provided by the power company, the wiring within the pipe, your electrical panel (which may have breakers or fuses), and your grounding system. The service size is measured in Amps, with the most common residential sizes being 60 amps, 100 amps, and 200 amps.
What is a service upgrade?
A service upgrade involves ensuring that your electrical service meets current standards and codes. This often requires replacing an outdated fuse box with a modern panel that features breakers. Even if you already have breakers, they might be old and no longer adequate, or you might need additional power for your home. A full service upgrade includes replacing the exterior service pipe, the internal wiring, the meter, the wiring from the meter to the panel, the panel itself, the breakers within the panel, and updating the grounding system with necessary components such as ground rods, communication ground, and water ground.
How do I know I need a service upgrade?
After the power company is responsible for maintaining the lines from the power pole to your home, it becomes your duty to maintain anything beyond that point. Several signs indicate the need for a service upgrade, including buzzing near your electrical panel, fuses in your electrical box, numerous wires tangled under each fuse or breaker, breakers that trip and don’t reset, a panel that is full and in need of expansion, visible rust on or within the panel, frayed wires feeding the panel, a damaged or deteriorating exterior service pipe or meter, a service size of 60 amps, or if your electrical service is more than 20 years old. It’s important to note that electrical codes have undergone significant changes in recent decades, aiming to enhance safety and accommodate the growing demands placed on our electrical systems.
